Labiaplasty is a
cosmetic surgery that changes the shape as well as reduces the size of the lips
on the outside of the vagina. These lips are known as the Labia Minora.
Why Have This Procedure?
Some women are born
with irregular or large labia. Other women can develop this after childbirth.
It can be just a sign of aging. Enlarged labia can be an embarrassment for some
women. The appearance of an out of shape or large labia causes them to lose their
self-esteem.
Chronic Labial Irritation
Chronic labial
irritation is caused by wearing clothing that is too tight. This can cause
discomfort when having sex, playing sports or any other physical activity.
Labiaplasty can
change the appearance, shape, and size of the labia. After the surgery, those
women who have irritated, painful labia will find relief. Self-esteem will also
be restored.
Major Reasons for this Procedure
There
are two major reasons for having this surgery:
- Cosmetic Reasons: Women are often embarrassed or unhappy with their labia. This can affect their sexual relationships.
- Medical Reasons: An enlarged labia can cause discomfort when wearing tight clothes and during sexual activity and.
What If You Have Not Had Children?
Often women want to
know if they can get a labiaplasty even when they have not had any children.
The answer is yes. If the enlarged labia causes unhappiness or physical
discomfort due to its appearance, you should look into having the procedure
done. This cosmetic surgery changes the way you look on the outside of the
vagina, not the inside, like vaginoplasty.
Where Is This Performed and How Long it Takes?
This is done in a
surgical suite for outpatients located at Vaginal Rejuvenation Center in
Ventura County. The labiaplasty procedure takes up 2 hours. Another hour is
usually spent in the recovery room under the watchful eye of a Registered
Nurse. Most patients can return to work in 2 to 4 days after the procedure.
Surgery Itself
The labiaplasty
surgery has been performed under conscious sedation using a short acting
medication known as Diprovan (propophol). You are asleep during the surgery and
will usually wake up minutes after the surgery is finished. You will not need
to be intubated or paralyzed during the surgery.
Risks or Discomfort
There are some risks
with having this procedure done, however, they are extremely rare. One of them
is having an infection. There will be some discomfort at the site of the
surgery for a few days but it will then gradually decrease. You will receive
pain medication and often antibiotics. In approximately 6 weeks, you will be
totally healed. All the sutures are the absorbable ones, so there is need for
them to be removed.
Post Op Visits
Postoperative visits
for local patients are recommended at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, to make certain
that the healing is going well. For those patients from out of town, it is
recommended there be a postoperative visit at 3 to 4 weeks.
