Varicose veins
are veins that are filled with blood and often become enlarged due to age and
weight gain. These are prominent in people fifty and older; however, these can
also appear in someone who is younger as well. They can occur on the arms and
legs, but seem to appear more commonly on the legs. These appear when the veins
do not permit the blood to flow backwards properly.
When this
happens, the veins swell even more, bringing about more pain. Those who stand
for long periods, or walk a lot, can have many surface veins that itch. This
definitely can cause some problems as if you scratch them, you could see ulcers
forming on the legs.
Irregular blood
flow to the legs can cause blood clotting and phlebitis, an inflammation in the
area when the vein is located, which is usually the legs. Many people in the
workforce that have occupations in which they have to stand for long periods,
tend to have varicose veins.
There are many
non-surgical remedies that will aid in the relief of phlebitis; however, it
will not stop it from reoccurring. One common remedy is to lie flat on a bed or
sofa and elevate the legs on several pillows. This will help the blood to flow
upwards towards the heart and release some of the built up blood in the lower
extremities, thus decreasing the bulging veins. A daily exercise regime that
exercises the leg is also helpful. However, as stated above, this is only a
temporary solution.
Massage therapy
is also an alternative to surgical methods used to eliminate painful varicose
veins. Those who suffer from varicose veins can also use special stockings that
will help to lessen the symptoms of swollen, tender, varicose veins.
Other methods
that can be used are, of course, surgical means. If you decide to have this
form of vein removal treatment, La Nouvelle Medical Spa offers Phlebectomy, an
outpatient procedure that is used to remove superficial varicose veins. Dr Hanna, MD does this form of cosmetic
surgery with the aid of a local anesthetic.
When this vein
removal treatment is used, tiny incisions are made on the skin surface where
the varicose vein is located. These swollen veins are removed, piece by piece.
This is a relatively simple procedure that allows the patients soon to resume
their normal activities. After the Phlebectomy varicose vein removal, Dr. Hanna
suggests his patients to wear special stockings, called compression stockings,
which you wear for about a week’s time. This stocking will help the swelling in
the area to disappear. During the recovery period, you may notice some bruising
and redness, as well as minor swelling, all of which can be improved through
regular use of the special stockings. The incision sites will fade away over a
period of six to 12 months.
After the phlebectomy, you
should notice a marked improvement in comfort, and you can resume your normal
routine immediately after the procedure. Exercise and heavy lifting should be
avoided during the first one to two weeks following the procedure, to allow the
area to fully heal.
Here
are the main features Phlebectomy Varicose Vein Removal:
- Actual removal of varicose veins through a very small 3-4mm incision.
- Performed under local tumescent anesthesia.
- Leg wrapped for 1-2 days, then use compression hose daily for 2 weeks.
- Activity as tolerated.
- Incisions virtually invisible.
- High
patient satisfaction.
